Lake Cania

Picturesque Lake Cania is a must see, located only 11km north of the Cania Gorge picnic area and 37km north of Monto.  The sealed road from Monto branches off the A3 Burnett Highway 12 km north of Monto and passes through the 3,000 hectare Cania Gorge National Park.

The Lake is situated on Three Moon Creek, a tributary of the Burnett River, approximately 110km upstream from the junction of the two rivers.  The dam is constructed from earth and rockfill, has a storage capacity of 88,500 megalitres and filled to capacity for the first time during the 2011 flood.

The short steep walk or easy drive to the lookout is well worth the effort. From here the breathtaking panoramic views of the gorge’s coloured sandstone cliffs and the spectacular sunsets will leave lasting memories of Cania. Kangaroos and whiptail wallabies inhabit the area during late afternoon

Fish from the shore or a boat.  Lake Cania is noted for saratoga catches. Other species include bass, golden perch (yellow belly), silver perch, eel-tailed catfish, spangled perch, eel and snub-nosed garfish.

Fishing stocking occurs three times a year and stock impoundment permits are required all year round.

These may be obtained from Brett’s Boats, Bait and Tackle located at the dam, BIG4 Cania Gorge Holiday Park, Cania Gorge Tourist Retreat or Monto Newsagency.

Competitions including the Basstasstic Fishing Tournament hold events at the Lake often, drawing many local and keen anglers to the water.

After fishing, sailing, water skiing, canoeing or wind surfing, relax under the shade trees and enjoy a picnic or a barbecue in the attractively landscaped grounds.

Facilities include a boat ramp, picnic shelters, electric barbecues, public conveniences, a lookout and Brett’s Boat, Bait and Tackle for supplies.

Camping is not permitted at Lake Cania, but is available at the nearby tourist parks.

Nearest Services and Re-Supply

The closest fuel, hire boats and public telephone are 4km away at the BIG4 Cania Gorge Holiday Park.  Bait is also available at that park as well as the Cania Gorge Tourist Retreat, near the Gorge.

Monto, the nearest town, provides facilities including a variety of shops, supermarkets, pharmacy, butcher, bakery, banking, Australia Post, hospital, fuel, gas and veterinarian services.
